Visitors are advised against visiting the Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir regions, as ongoing tensions still threaten to turn into violence. It is also advised that travellers stay away from regions on the India/Pakistan border. There are a number of locations that government agencies advise against visiting, and checks should be made in full before travelling to the country. Though this is the case, the vast majority of visits to India are trouble free, with the exception of petty crime and theft that one would associate with any country. Common sense prevails. A few vaccinations may be required before travelling – typhoid, cholera and yellow fever, amongst others – but check with a doctor before travelling, as these may not be necessary. Water should be boiled or otherwise sterilised before use. Dairy products should not be consumed unless made from pasteurised or sterilised ingredients. Fruit and vegetables should be peeled and well-cooked before consumption, and all meat and fish should be well-cooked before eating.
