Roads in India vary a great deal in quality, through the majority tend to be of a poor standard and riddled with potholes, and mountainous roads can often be impassable by all but the best of four-wheel drive vehicles. Bus services run through the country and offer cheap, reliable transport from place to place, though the crowded nature and discomfort of travelling via bus does put a lot of people off. Taxis and auto rickshaws are available in most towns, and rates tend to be reasonable – it is wise to agree on a fare before travelling however, especially if the meter is not working. Railways in India are legendary, and for good reason. The stereotypical notion of the overcrowded carriages with people hanging on the outsides are not that far removed from reality, though those visiting the country are far more likely to use the much more comfortable and relaxed carriages available, with air conditioning and decent food available. Those daring enough to take on the local trains, however, are in for an experience of a lifetime. Trains cover the majority of the country and there are a number of discounts available for any number of stipulations. Visiting India and not using the train would be an experience sorely missed out on. Internal flights are available daily, and the recent opening of Indian skies means there are more and more operators offering flights seemingly each day. Prices range, but tend to be fairly pricey, and it is only recommended that flights are used if time is running low. Discount fares are available and special rates are common, especially for foreigners. A number of local passenger ferries run services to offshore islands, as well as boats being available for touristic purposes. Services can be unreliable and are suspended during monsoon season, but can also be an affordable and interesting way of getting around.
